Rob Monster Buys JustDropped.com

by Adam Strong in Categories: Acquisitions

We recently received word that the deal announced in the post below never completed. The announcement has since been removed from the Epik blog.

[Ed. Updated March 17th, 2010]

Rob Monster announced on the Epik.com blog [Ed. Post Removed] today that expiring domain name service provider JustDropped.com has been purchased and will be incorported in to the Epik.com offerings. JustDropped claims to receive 400,000 monthly unique visitors and have 42,000  email subscribers.

Monster and JustDropped.com creator Dan Rubin plan to make improvements and updates to the site, expand the drop catching capabilities and further integrate services in to the existing services of Epik auctions.

Monster states on his blog that “I like drop-catching even more now that large numbers of worthwhile names are being dropped on a daily basis.”   With many registrars moving domains in to auctions before they actually drop, DNN has seen the quantity of good dropping domains take a huge dive.  There are still good domains dropping but this market seems to be one that is dwindling not growing.

    Was this a “Purchase” or a “Partnership”? It came across reading the blog post by Rob that it was a partnership, which is different then a purchase. As stated in the posting “Dan and I are both enthusiastic about this partnership”.

    “I like drop-catching even more now that large numbers of worthwhile names are being dropped on a daily basis” – thats wrong, these names are mostly auctioned off, they dont reach these dropped name markets. That segment is essentially killed now.

    True that finding the gems is that much harder but still can find some good names regularly if you use the right tools/sites. We have had success doing for outselves and custoemrs for over 2 years now. Congrats to Dan on the partnership, he is a great grabber of quality domains as they drop (not auctioned) Cheers.

    @Jamie I was tipped on this and probably could stand corrected. Waiting for my partner or Rob to give me the details. He was contacted by Rob today but was sick so I took the ball.

    @freshavails I guess gems are in the eye of the beholder. Care to share some goodies you’ve seen recently ? Thanks

    @Adam,
    Rob had placed a comment on another site confirming it was a Purchase. He said it started out as a partnership but it made sense to do it as a purchase later. It was a cash, equity sale but terms were not disclosed.

    Here’s what Rob wrote over at Domain Name Wire:

    It started out as a partnership but ultimately it made more sense to put the companies together. Dan will remain President of JustDropped which remains a separate operating unit for reporting purposes. Dan will also become Director of Domain acquisition for Epik, a role that suits him well. We are working on partnerships with a number of other drop-catch partners to provide JustDropped customers with a one-stop-shop for getting the names they want.

    As for the deal itself, it is comprised of cash and equity. Because it is a transaction between two private companies, we opted to not announce the exact structure of the deal. Why? There is no reason to create a value-setting event for a private and closely held company. It is a good outcome for both Dan and Epik, and the integration is proceeding well. JustDropped customers can look forward to some innovation in terms of getting abandoned names.

    Regarding domains that have been picked up after expiry, beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder. Let us know forget that some gems need a little more polish to shine. :) I am not claming that you will find a 6 or 5 figure sale but those in the hundreds and even low thousands are there. A few we have picked up recently include: LazySlob.com, TransferSongs.com, BlondBeer.com and SecurityDevelopers.com. Not huge potential $ but decent. This is just a few of our regs, and our customers have regged hundreds off our lists in just the past few weeks. Each person’s tasted and opinions are different so you have to judge for yourself. Thanks for taking the time to respond Adam and as always, happy hunting.
