Al Gore Wants To Create New Domain Name Extension .ECO

by Adam Strong in Categories: Alternate Extensions

ecoFormer Vice President Gore, who often took barbs about his misconstrued statement about ‘inventing the internet’, can now partially lay claim to inventing a new domain name. Al Gore and his Alliance for Climate Protection have announced  their intentions to join a group of other “internet entrepreneurs, leading scientists, ecological and philanthropic groups, and environmentally conscious high-profile individuals”  in applying for a new domain name extension, .ECO. The domain name will still need ICANN approval however before becoming a reality.

The Dot Eco advisory board also includes Davis Guggenheim director of An Inconvenient Truth, Actor Roger Moore, Author and Physicist Richard Muller and Jim Dufour of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Gore said in a statement found on Politico.com “We fully support Dot Eco LLC in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application process and look forward to working with Dot Eco LLC to promote .eco. This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole.”

From the Dot Eco LLC company site.

More than just a label, Dot Eco will finance groundbreaking environmental initiatives that have a real, positive impact on our environment. The Dot Eco brand will build an open, ecumenical community around this shared cause, and create a common knowledge base that enables individuals to do their part to help the environment.

Domain name consulting group Minds and Machines led by Antony Van Couvering and Jothan Frakes is assisting the group in applying for the new TLD as well as setting up the necessary registry infrastructure.  Frakes told DNN from the ICANN meeting in Mexico, “We’re putting the best of the best together to support what we believe to be a very good cause and we’re excited to see new top level domain names come to the marketplace so that communities and causes can be well served.”

Yeah… Gore is an idiot.

Gore is just one of many involved in this project. I expect that there’ll be plenty of eco people who will want to join in on the fun.

…Dot Eco brand will build an open, >> ecumenical << community around this shared cause

This is a secular religion and Algore will be accepting donations into his carbon credit sanctuary … er or is that coffers? What a SCAM.

This is going to be nothing but a huge sink hole for them … and poop … both DotECO.com and DotEcho.com are already gone.

Thanks for the write-up. This is going to be big — already is, actually — and will encourage some of the many other new TLD initiatives I’m aware of to announce. Nothing worse than being the second one to announce a new extension.

I should also note that as well as consulting services, Minds + Machines also provides registry services — as in registry software and hardware. See http://www.mindsandmachines.com/systems/ .

Come on people, this is a waste on time. Why does the world need yet another TLD? If Al Gore and his posse want to help out with the environment don’t waste money on this, put it to something useful. The amount of money and human resources that are required to promote this will far outweight the good it will do. It will fade out in no time…is anyone who is already a major player in environmental efforts actually going to utilise the extension? Why would Greenpeace.org need greenpeace.eco…they don’t. Bin the idea…its rubbish

yeah, another tld would only mean more money going around from / in our pockets, i think .org domain is sufficient to handle .eco work.

Looking at the previous comments, everyone thinks it’s a crappy idea (which it so clearly is) apart from the one comment from the consultants who will be making $$$$$$$ out of help implement it. Too funny.

In a presentation panel led at ICANN the Surfrider Foundation was represented as a supporter of .ECO. Who was it who was on the panel who stated this and who at the Surfrider Foundation was sited as a supporter. An interested friend asked me for more detail about this. Thanks in advance.

@Frederic Feiman – You were in attendance of the session.
To refresh your recollection, the speaker was Fred Krueger, who announced that it was Jim Moriarty, the CEO of Surf Rider supporting .ECO.
This was all announced in the session. I gave you my card, Next time write to me directly if you have a question.

@Fred – btw, if you want to know some other major supporters of .eco, just check out their website at http://www.dotecotld.com, where many of them are listed.

[…] Al Gore Wants To Create New Domain Name Extension .ECO | Domain Name News Dot Eco TLD According to Dot Eco TLD… "Why ECO? By choosing to register their domain under the proposed .eco extension, individuals and corporations can signal their interest in joining a global ecological movement that promotes nonpartisan change. Profits from registration fees will be used to fund scientific initiatives and research in climate change, ocean analysis, economic policy, and other environmentally related areas." Its good in that sense but I can see it falling under abuse for green washing purposes. Sounds like another money making scheme to me, nothing more. __________________ Since it is all too clear, It takes time to grasp it. I think you’re ALL missing the point. Gore is a global figure, his involvement in our industry will be of benefit in exposure no matter what he does. We should PUSH for his .eco and let him ‘campaign’ for it.

People (and the press) PAY ATTENTION to what he does. Yes?

It’s like diseases, once a celeb gets it, it becomes visible and credible and the money flows in (Michael J. Fox as example).

Gore is as well known, as respected, as they come. This is a BIG opportunity, we should help him. A noble-prize, oscar winning, former VP? Bring him on, forgetting any of the merits of the extension itself. This is in terms of benefit to all of us an industry. JMHO.

The world needs more people like Al Gore, and less morons who are willing to parrot tired, worn-out, incorrect propaganda.
