But not all of them because DENIC only gave a week’s warning and not all Registrars are in a position to do the work required to hook into the special process they’re running at the start.

Tucows/Opensrs aren’t participating, I believe.

Thanks for the link Frank. It’s always good to know why courts have forced a change.

They have vw.com, vw.co.uk, vw.nl and vw.de, so vw.de makes a set :)

@IdiotDomainer: The .DE registry is organized as a sort of a collective – it is owned by the registrars and does not make a profit itself. Any profit that is earned is paid back to the registrars at the end of the year. I guess this would increase their profit too much and potentially lower give the registrars too much of a refund at the end of the year. In addition it would threaten DENIC’s neutral position when it comes to trademarks etc.

@Christoph: DENIC was ordered by a court to register the name for Volkswagen (which is a public corporation).

This is not a new TLD launch, but a change of rules, just similar to the one by .BIZ recently.

In theory it shouldn´t be allowed for DENIC or any registrar to assign a domain to a private corporation. What if someone else also had the right to vw.de? For .asia and other domain launches it was first come first served starting out with a queue for special rights (trademark, company name), which is a fair practice.
