Godaddy – Employees No Longer Allowed to Bid

by Adam Strong in Categories: Domain Aftermarket

Tags: , , , ,

Godaddy logoIn an official statement posted on Slashdot.org Godaddy.com attorneys have stated that they found nothing improper with the bidding activities of Godaddy VP Adam Dicker at the companies TDNAM.com expiring domain name marketplace.  The official statement goes on to explain that in the future all Godaddy employees will be prohibited from participating in any future TDNAM auctions, sales and back ordering services.
Godaddy came under fire after reports of “insider activity” surfaced through posts at NamePros.com. DomainNameWire.com and TheDomains.com sites both followed up on the story reporting that other auction companies were involved in similar activities. NameJet.com representatives followed up by informing us of their company policy.
The issue of “insider activity” is likely far from over. As employees become engaged in the business of domains, it seems natural that they would want to participate as well.  These companies have put their best foot forward, but enforcement and policing this activity, let alone retaining quality employees, is likely something that will prove to be quite difficult in the future.
Official Godaddy statement can be found after the jump. (more…)

ICANN and IANA Domain Names Hijacked

by Adam Strong in Categories: ICANN / Policy, Miscellaneous

Tags: , , , , , ,

According to website Zone-H, a group of Turkish hackers hijacked ICANN and IANA domain names on Thursday morning. All of the domain names are registered at Register.com. The group took over control of the domain names, including icann.com, icann.net, iana.com and iana-servers.com. The DNS records were changed and redirected to the hackers site with the following message :

You think that you control the domains but you don’t! Everybody knows wrong. We control the domains including ICANN!

Don’t you believe us?

haha :)

(Lovable Turkish hackers group)

This is the second major group to have their domain names hijacked in the last 30 days.  Previously Comcast.net domain names were hijacked at Network Solutions. So much for “preserving and enhancing the operational stability, reliability, security, and global interoperability of the Internet” eh ?

Happy Birthday To Us!

by Adam Strong in Categories: Up to the Minute

happy birthday cupcakeFrank and I both forgot Domain Name News turned 1 year old on June 12th . It’s been a busy June and time flies.  It seems like 1 year of real time is like a decade on the internet. I think that we’ve both been so busy in the domain name business for so long that it just seems like we’ve been doing this forever and time slips by.

In that 1 year, we’ve redesigned a couple times, we were slashdotted, and we published about 650 articles and thousands of your comments. We’d like to thank you all, especially our friends who helped us launch, our advertisers and everyone who reads, comments and tips us off. We couldn’t do any of this without you !

ICANN Policy Brief on Domain Monetization- Domain Tasting Killing Legitimate Use of Domains

by Adam Strong in Categories: Featured, ICANN / Policy

Tags: , , , , , ,

In a recently released policy brief, ICANN addresses domain name monetization (PDF) as if it were a problem to be addressed. The policy brief begins by discussing and explaining domain monetization and Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising in layman terms. The paper further goes on to discuss domain tasting and points out that domain monetization, specifically PPC, is at the root of the problems of domain tasting. Later in the brief, ICANN suggests that domain monetization may also be preventing internet users from using domain names. Generally speaking, the policy brief places domain monetization at the center stage as a problem likely to be cited in future ICANN policy considerations. (more…)

GoDaddy Registers 30 Millionth Domain Name

by Chad Kettner in Categories: Up to the Minute

Tags: , ,

The GoDaddy Group Inc., which includes GoDaddy.com, Wild West Domains (its resale brand) and Blue Razor (its bulk domain brand) has reached a new milestone, registering its 30 millionth domain, RulesOfSaving.com.

GoDaddy is either registering, renewing or transferring about one domain every second of every day, making it the most popular domain registrar around. Although GoDaddy has registered far more than 30 million domains since it began, the tally only includes active domains – making the feat even more impressive.
