Did Auction.com Sell for $2.5 Million ?

by Adam Strong in Categories: Domain Aftermarket

Unconfirmed reports are bubbling on Twitter and other sites that the ‘category killer’ domain name, Auction.com, may have been sold for $2.5 million.  Based on the current whois record and the whois record from 2-days ago, the domain is definitely under new ownership. A new site is also live with the domain redirecting to REDC,  a company that specializes in foreclosure auctions and has been using the less-than-stellar domain name USHomeAuction.com.

DNN is still working to receive official confirmation about the sale and price from the parties involved. It’s interesting to note that Auction.com was reportedly listed on Sitepoint.com by an unverified seller who stated on the listing that they had already received a $2.5 million dollar offer, but had 2 days to decide.

“Urgent sale because we already have a buyer whom has made a serious offer that isn’t the best offer we can get, but high enough for us to sell.  Buyer is pressuring us to sell otherwise he’ll withdraw; therefore, this is urgent and we don’t want to blow a sure thing.

Most would have regarded that sort of posting to be a scam, but the timing of the post and recent changes in the whois records, as well as a new site seem to indicate otherwise.

The Auction.com domain has been for sale and gone unsold at Moniker live domain auctions in the past. If this sale proves to be legitimate, Auction.com will take the #2 spot on the top domain name sales for 2009.  With this and the recent $5.1 million sale of Toys.com, the domain aftermarket seems to be red hot.

Well, if it all turns out to be true rather than a figment of someone’s imagination then damn that’s a bargain!

If I remember correctly, Auction.com was on the block at TRAFFIC for $5,000,000+ a couple of times, but didn’t sell. However, a sale of $2.5 million would not surprise me.

REDC is running huge foreclosure auctions throughout the country. Many bank owned properties that are go unsold by realtors are ending up at their auctions. Interestingly enough I have monitored a few of their other acquisitions they purchased their old domain ushomeauction.com for 2488 at buy domains. Nice upgrade to that horrible name and will fit nicely on all of those signs!! What A Buy!

I agree with the seller and those above that $2.5M represents an excellent price for a buyer. Great news.

It still amazes me how much these names go for; we say that $2.5mil is a good deal. Regards!

If it is true, it is a good sale indeed in this time of difficult economy.
