Forget About Domains! License Plates Fetch Big Bucks
Eat your heart out domainers, CNN reports on license plate auctions in Abu Dhabi where 300 plates sold for $56 million. The current world record for the most expensive license plate is $6.8 million for plate #5. The price is 10x more expensive than the car it was put on. The owner, Talal Khouri, is now gunning for plate #1 which will be auctioned next month. He claims to be willing to pay $15-20 million. Sounds to me like the domain name auction companies need to do some heavy-duty marketing in the UAE.

I totally agree.
These are the same guys that own hundreds of cars cuz they can.
I sometimes get calls from them wanting custom golf carts (one of my sites)and were willing to spend outragious money to the point that I didnt know what to believe lol
If you look at Prince Alaweed Bin Talal, he invested billions in businesses and startup ideas. So yes, marketing to the Arabian area would be beneficial to the domain industry…

Certainly the domain auction guys should so some marketing in the Middle East, and India and the Far East as thats where the money is. The financial crisis afflicting Western economies could dampen enthusiasm for domain speculation there.

And I thought the auction of Massachusetts license plates featuring the jersey numbers of Patriots players was an anomaly!

Hi, The interesting fact is that LicensePlates.com sold for $54666 at Greatdomains. CarLicensePlates.com is for sale at Sedo for $1000 ( I own it).
