Gangsters.com Listed for Auction at eBay

by Chad Kettner in Categories: Domain Sales Alert

Crime-based games, TV shows, and movies have a rich history that dates back to The Public Enemy and Little Caesar in the 1930’s, The Godfather trilogy in the ’70s,  Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction in the ’90s, and all the way up to more recent works including Grand Theft Auto, Mafia Wars, The Sopranos, American Gangster, and The Departed.

And now there’s a killer domain for sale that encapsulates it all: Gangsters.com.

The domain name was listed for auction on eBay earlier today and bidding will be open until September 21 at 10am PDT. In this short report, I’m going to discuss Gangsters.com and the value it could add to your business or domain portfolio.

Description

Gangsters.com could be used for a music label, a TV series, a book series, or even an eCommerce site for mafia and gangster related products. However, it seems the domain would reach its maximum potential as a hub for a popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created similar to Mafia Wars or World of Warcraft.

Millions of people around the world currently play MMORPGs with worldwide revenues exceeding $1.5 billion.

Industry and Domain Details

  • Gangsters.com has been online since July 22, 1998.
  • Compete.com estimates 400 unique visitors each month over the past year.
  • The owner has parked the domain at Sedo and says it receives 30 visitors per day (an average of 900 visitors per month).
  • Google Adwords estimates approximately 110,000 search queries each month for “Gangsters”.
  • A Google search for “gangsters” returns 5,520,000 results.
  • An eBay search for “gangsters” delivers nearly 4500 related products.

Conclusion

Although Gangsters.com isn’t likely to earn loads of money as a parked page, it has nearly unlimited potential for development. Crime-related movies, books, and games are everywhere these days – and there aren’t many one-word generic .com names around that have as much potential as Gangsters.com.

“Amazing domain… worth 7 figures, easily.”

What on earth makes you think that? There is NO ONE advertising on that word with adwords.

I will be shocked if it goes over $100,000, there just is not a lot of great ways to monetize it. I think a more realistic price would be $20,000-$30,000, even then the seller will be getting a good price.

Lets see who is closer=)

“I think a more realistic price would be $20,000-$30,000, even then the seller will be getting a good price. ”

Personally I would have said less, though agree with your thinking. The real issue with this name, what will prevent it from getting a high price is that commercially it has little focus. Maybe a movie will come out with the same name or a board game or something and and enduser might come after it but that is unlikely. Nobody is really likely to chase this name hard because there is no clear business behind it.

The probelm is very apparent just from reading this listing,

“* A massively multi-player (Gangsters themed) online role-playing video game (MMORPG).

* A music label/brand.

* A TV series.

* A book series.

* An eCommerce site for Mafia/Gangster related DVDs, books, products etc.”

Everything except the last one is totally unrealistic.

Great name that is easy to remember. I would also want to own Gangster.com which I notice is parked, if I bought this one.

$15k-$25k name reseller. Anymore and its hype or end user.

Personally I hope it gets the very little attention it deserves. I cannot think of any major use for a name like this. Of course maybe Sarah Palin could use a name like this and somehow legitimize its use by extolling the virtues of our Nations legitimate Gangster politicians.

I agree with Josh…worth about $15k to $25k

Solid domain. The value isn’t in the name though, it’s in the brand power for a gangsters related brand that has cash to spend and wants to be #1.

Yeah, maybe for someone who wants to manufacture candy called “Gangsters.” “Gangsters” wouldn’t be a candy bar or anything, but rather little tiny gangster candies that come 75-100 pieces to a package (kind of like Nerds or something). Kids would like something like that, but someone would have to first create it and then market it well. I don’t have the money to do all that, otherwise I’d give it a shot.

This is unrelated to the topic, but could someone who uses Sedo.com tell me if them asking to charge my credit card 5 Euro’s is “normal” to verify my account (they then credit you back the 5 Euro’s)? I have been wanting to try them out, but I’ve never had anyone ask to charge 5 Euro’s to my credit card before. Seems fishy, potentially, anyway.

It is a common practice to verify you are the owner of the debit or credit card. Companies will credit or debit one or two random amounts and then ask you to verify the amount transacted. In the case of a debit, it will show as an “auth” and will either be refunded or simply expire.

A nice domain, but it’s a little difficult to make money of it… i think…

Anthony David

It could be good for an app or game developers that wants to brand their game. Agree with everyone else though, stay clear of this high risk domain.

This domain has huge branding potential in that it has the “cool” factor built into it. This domain could be used for a clothing line, a paintball shop or even the branding of a new line of paintball equipment. Yes, it could be used for a new type of candy like nerds etc. Based on the little bit I have read about browser based multi-user games with micro transactions, it could very well be build into a successful gaming platform.

I am with the others in saying that 15k to 25k is a good price for a reseller. Get a couple of end users participating and the sky is the limit.

Come onnn, surely not worth anything like that. If it was seriously worth anything like that, get an appraisal from someone like Moniker and show us.

* No protection; not a complete set and singular not included
* Does not includes content or Intellectual Property

What else could you buy with $15K??

Does anyone know if the Health Care domain extension .MD from Max.MD is worth anything or is it a joke?

Hi,
I think it will touch an unbelievable price as the domain is of high repute. Anxious to know the answers.
