Group of Internet Mavericks Lasso Domain Cowboys.com
A group of internet domain name investors led by Eric Rice apparently has banded together to make the winning bid to acquire the domain name Cowboys.com . The domain name was placed back up for auction in the Moniker.com silent auction after the representatives from the Dallas Cowboys football team reportedly backed out of their winning bid of $275,000 from the live domain auction held the week before.
The auction which ended today had a total of 6 bids and an ending price of $370,000, a final sale price well above the final bid price from the live auction.
Update:Â When Rice was asked in an email about the purchase he said his team has “been studying the thriving country and western market for over 6 months and are glad to finally have the domain needed to proceed in the category”.

YAHOO!!!!! My brother was the owner of cowboys.com. He offered the domain name to the Dallas Cowboys and they wanted him to almost “give it away”. Thank the good Lord, prayers are answered. I told him yesterday when the purchaser backed out, it would turn out to be a blessing. And so it was. We give thanks to the Lord Almighty who is still in control.

Only ones who lost on this deal was the Dallas Cowboys…go figure.

Dan, you aren’t my “ex” are you? NO, your too nice. My brother is a great guy, big heart, and very honest. We all knew that the domain was and is worth more than he asked. But, we are grateful that they backed out. He was not upset at all by phone,I told him that it happened for a reason and I believed, we both believed that he would receive a larger sum. We prayed. The new owners of the domain will make even more for it, I believe much, much, much more if they just hold on for awhile. I believe the Dallas Cowboys will eventually pay the price. I believe, at least a million.

Isn’t Eric Rice a long time resident of Maryland?
Not many cowboys in Maryland, but there are definitely a few “indians” up there that would love to own the cowboys… and now they do.

Like I said…Your brother did great… and the way I think it was a “win ~ “win deal.
Because the people that bought it won to.

“As the original owner, I am pleased to hear the new owners will continue with the Western theme. With the resources Mr. Rice has, I am sure Cowboys.com visitors will see many enhancements. As for me, I’m going to buy a new tractor and restore that 68 Camaro out in the barn. Thank you for the past 12 years. Murray Thibodeaux”

James, my guess is: this group believed the value of the name went up considerably between last week and today based on the notoriety gained from all the news reports. Either way, who cares why he didn’t bid last week? He did this week and that’s all that matters.
I still can’t believe the Dallas Cowboys turned down the opportunity to own their own anchor domain (forever) for a mere 275k and then a week later a bunch of “rodeo clowns” buy it for $370,000. Makes you wonder who the real clowns are?
I’m happy for the current owners, but I wish the Dallas Cowboys had not been so stupid.

Great for the seller congrats. The Cowboys IMO are not upset I mean $275,000 is nothing for them they must not have wanted the domain. I think because we see the value in domains we think everyone does. They are the Dallas Cowboys so that domain is probably fine.
