Great article. Very detailed and representative of overall traditional aspects of domain evaluations. However, at a happy hour party with a large group of SEM and domainers in Portland, OR, we debated the determination of which was more valuable in a domain choice, singular or plural. While a lot depends on the domain name itself, overall, many domainers look at the singular first. However, the SEM experts said the plurals were more valuable. I agreed on some points, but is that the way it works in a domain auction? My experience told me that the singular usually was more valuable. I'm reconsidering that position now.

We thought of two domains: Table.com and Tables.com

We quickly chose the plural of this domain as being more valuable (not by a significant $$ amount). The one basic reason we agreed on was that "Tables.com" seemed like a better brand for a build out -- or a co-branding marketing asset. However, if you take the domain "baby.com" and compare it to "babies.com", the singular easily beats the plural. The proof is in the Johnson & Johnson pudding.

There are so many variables to domain name values it's very hard to really determine how "high" a domain value can go. What you can find out, though, is where its "ground floor value" is. Find out that appraisal amount, and you don't want to have a buyer dig below your "ground floor value" and "collapse" the minimum value of your domain.

These types of articles you are posting are extremely valuable to domain investors and the business/marketing sector. Keep it up!

I got a lot out of this article although I'm still not sure I know the exact difference between a premium generic and a brandable generic domain name. The 6 factors help but some could be applied to premium generic domains as well.

A lot of the domain name industry terms are pretty fuzzy and it's assumed everyone agrees on a definition when it is actually difficult to pin one down.

And I think it is "lay" not "lies"...but I could be wrong (paging my fourth grade English teacher...).

Excellent article from someone that sees the BIG picture. Use his points and be ahead of the game. There is information in this piece that I have used since 1994 but is not easy to communicate to others. M.Fiol articulates it very well.
