Two New Registry Companies Launched to Help new TLDs

by Chad Kettner in Categories: News

Two new registry consulting & services companies – Minds + Machines and Central Registry Solutions – were launched at ICANN Mexico City to help anybody interested in starting a new TLD work through the process from beginning to end – saving time, money, and confusion along the way.

Minds + Machines was founded by two very recognizable domaining experts, Antony Van Couvering (CEO) and Jothan Frakes (COO). The company aims to make the new TLD process simpler, understandable, more reliable, and less expensive. They offer an Espresso technology platform that provides everything a new TLD applicant needs for the low flat rate fee of $1.50 per name per year – with no setup charges and no long-term contract.

Antony van CouveringVan Couvering has been active in the domain industry since 1996, playing a significant role in forming Internet governance issues, launching several ccTLDs, and consulting many of America’s top companies in intellectual property laws and the Internet user experience. Before Minds + Machines he formed two other cutting edge companies – NetNames USA (sold to Group NBT) and NameEngine (Sold to VeriSign) – and operated Names@Work.

Jothan FrakesFrakes became involved in the industry in 1993 when he started managing and operating domain names and websites. In 1997 he helped found eNIC, the registry operator for .CC, and worked as the Chief Technology Officer before moving on to several other positions at top domaining companies. He has been the Senior Manager of Engineering at VeriSign in charge of .TV and .CC, VP of Business Development at Name Intelligence, and Senior Director of Business Development at Oversee.net. He has also created and produced the Domain Roundtable and DomainFest Global conferences, worked live domain auctions, and managed registry and registrar relations for over 118 accredited registrars.

Central Registry Solutions was created in a joint venture by CentralNic and Network Solutions. The company was formed to help customers navigate the ICANN application process and provide advice on how to set up and maintain registry services for new TLDs while also offering back-end registry services and providing distribution services for entities that want to offer TLDs.

CentralNic is an independent global domain name registry that handles hundreds of millions of DNS queries and thousands of registry transactions every day. The company was founded in 1995 in order to bring more choice and competition into the UK domain name marketplace, and it has done just that – playing a major role in lowering the price of .co.uk domain names registrations and helping the UK become one of the biggest marketplaces for domains anywhere in the world.

Network Solutions started in 1979 and evolved from a small systems integration engineering company to one of the leading providers of web services. The company currently offers small business solutions, domain names, web hosting, email accounts, website design, e-commerce, online marketing, and website security.

I think this is great idea. The process to get through the ICANN application is tough. It is always important to have an industry veteran and those in the know to guide through the hurdles. Although I believe that many existing registries will adopt more tlds in the future, there will be other entrepreneurs that will be doing it for the 1st time.

The application process and implementation is going to be very difficult.

However, if anyone can be successful at creating a new tld, it will be Jothan.

I wish them well on the new venture.

@actnow – That was a really kind compliment. Very much appreciated!

Minds + Machines had a good start at the ICANN meeting in Mexico City (Still there) and we’re headed next to Sydney in June for that ICANN meeting.

We’re really excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming opportunities with new top level domains, and we stand at the ready for those that would be attracted to working with us.
