Afilias buys the .MOBI Registry for an Undisclosed Amount

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Registries

Afilias, the company that (amongst others) operates the .INFO and .ORG registries has purchased the .MOBI sTLD operator, mTLD Top-Level Domain Ltd. for an undisclosed amount. The company has operated the registry infrastructure for the .MOBI sTLD from the start.

  • Afilias and dotMobi are both private Irish Limited companies. As private companies, the purchase price is undisclosed.
  • dotMobi is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Afilias Limited.
  • Afilias is the registry operator for .INFO with a direct contract with ICANN. dotMobi, although now a subsidiary of Afilias, will continue to be the registry operator for .mobi, under contract to ICANN.  The remainder of Afilias’ registry services contracts are with parties other than ICANN.
  • .mobi is a sponsored top-level domain. Reflective of this, the dotMobi Policy Advisory Board (PAB) and the .mobi Advisory Group (MAG) will remain in place to ensure a voice for the mobile community, including a voice for the 14 founders.
  • .mobi contains over 950,000 registrations across the world and is available at over 200 registrars. Over 80% of .mobi domains are active Web sites. The .mobi domain is in use throughout the world as a fast and intuitive mobile content discovery tool.

Afilias is owned by a number of registras and other companies – founding companies in 2001 included:, a division of G+D International LLC; Corporate Domain, Inc.; Domain Bank, Inc.; DomainInfo AB; Domain People, Inc.; Domain Registrations Services, Inc.; Enter-Price Multimedia AG (EPAG); Global Media Online, Inc.; Internet Council of Registrars (CORE); Netnames International Ltd.; Network Solutions, Inc.; Registrar Operations; Polar Software Ltd. d/b/a; PSI-USA, Inc.;; Schlund + Partner AG; LLC; Speednames, Inc.; Tucows. Some of the companies (i.e. Tucows) have since sold their shares. While the current list of owners is not public the board of the directors supports the assumption that InternetX, Sitename and Netnames still own shares in the company.

DUBLIN, IRELAND – 11 February 2010 – Afilias, a global provider of Internet infrastructure services and the registry operator for .INFO, today announced that it has acquired mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd., the sponsoring organization and registry operator for the .mobi top-level domain. Under terms of the private deal, Afilias Limited, an Irish Limited company, has acquired all of the issued and outstanding capital stodotMobick of mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd. (known publicly as dotMobi), and plans to continue operating dotMobi as a wholly owned subsidiary.
“Afilias has long been a leader in launching new TLDs and now supports over 50 percent of the entire universe of registrations in TLDs launched since 2001,” said Hal Lubsen, CEO of Afilias. “Our acquisition of dotMobi reflects our long term commitment to the success of the TLDs we support and the communities they serve.  We are particularly proud of the global success of the .mobi domain, and look forward to working with the dotMobi team and the mobile community to build on this solid base.”
Afilias and dotMobi have worked closely together since the Mobi JV (predecessor to dotMobi) was started by Nokia, Vodafone and Microsoft to apply to ICANN for the .mobi TLD in 2004.  Upon approval, Afilias provided registry services in support of the successful launch in 2006, and today there are nearly one million .mobi registrations.  Now more established, dotMobi will benefit from the increased focus that a seasoned registry expert like Afilias will provide.
“The mobile Web continues to evolve and expand, and Afilias’ strategic domain expertise combined with mobile industry support will be a powerful accelerant for .mobi growth,” said Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. “Afilias’ strategies for growing top-level domains have directly resulted in several of the world’s largest domains, and we are excited to work closely with Afilias’ management to achieve dotMobi’s full potential.”
“With its excellent registry and DNS support, Afilias has been a close partner since the beginning,” said Jerry Easom, Chairman of the Board of dotMobi. “This partnership, coupled with the success of dotMobi in furthering acceptance of the mobile web, makes moving the ownership of dotMobi to Afilias a natural progression.  dotMobi founders, who include some of the largest companies in the mobile space, are looking forward to supporting dotMobi and the .mobi domain with involvement in both the MAG (.mobi Advisory Group) and the PAB (dotMobi Policy Advisory Board).”
Afilias provides registry and DNS services for more than 15 million domains, including more than 950,000 .mobi domains registered worldwide. In addition, Afilias supports .INFO, .ORG,  .aero, .ASIA, .AG (Antigua and Barbuda), .BZ (Belize), .GI (Gibraltar), .HN (Honduras), .IN (India), .LC (St. Lucia), .ME (Montenegro), .MN (Mongolia), .SC (the Seychelles), .VC (St. Vincent and the Grenadines).

Unless each .mobi ownership is automatically paired with each .com ownership, there is no integrity in using a .mobi.

The Dotmobi company reported a huge loss in 2007-2008 and also stopped requiring mobi domains to deliver mobile content, which was their only reason for existing.

Look for some savage cost-cutting and asset-selling by Afilias.

think actually a good thing as no-one had any idea mtld were wasting so much money, prob on themselves. sack the majority imho and start afresh with new leadership
afilias is a strong backer to have. interesting to see how this plays out
be good if they could get rid of ‘sponsors’ who have done nothing and try and get ‘gtld’ status rather than stld
