Verisign Registry to Increase COM & NET fees in July 2010
Verisign (VRSN) just sent an announcement to their Registrar list saying that they will increase the registration and renewal fees for COM & NET domains as of July 1st, 2010. The registration, renewal and transfer fee for .COM domains will then be increased from $6.86 to $7.34 and the .NET annual fees will be increased from $4.23 to $4.65. Verisign had not increased their prices in 2009. According to a settlement in for lawsuit between Verisign and ICANN in 2006, the company is allowed to increase their prices on an annual basis with increases of up to 7% per year for .COM.

Verisign had to make up somewhere the loss of revenue from domain tasting.
Who else should they penalize but the people that have no control over pricing – domain owner. As if I can take my .com somewhere else to be renewed. It all ends up back in Verisign’s pocket.
Another case of Icann and now Verisign lining their pockets at our expense.

For .NET you need to include the $0.75 as the ICANN Variable Registry-Level Fee (as defined in the .net Registry Agreement). So actually, the .net fee will be $4.65 + $0.75 = $5.40

Lets get this straight, a company raises prices and you get angry? Is this new to you? First time dealing with inflation?

“First time dealing with inflation?”
The weakness in that argument is that Verisign’s basic cost have decreased over the past couple years.
Except for Verisign’s entertainment expenses which increased due to the wine and dining of the new CEO of Icann. For example, the lavish party they threw in Washington, DC last quarter for Rod Beckstrom.
Or, the expensive parties at all of the Icann meetings.
I assume their lobbying cost in Washington, DC have increased.
Running the .com registry is like printing money.
The cost of running a registry is less than $ 2. per domain and they are now charge $ 7.34 .
