DomainNameWire.com SnapNames.com Auction Ends Today

by Adam Strong in Categories: Domain Auction

Tags: , , ,

Today is your last chance to put in bids on the DomainNameWire and SnapNames.com auction.  The auction, put together by Andrew Alleman of DomainNameWire, features names from his portfolio, other bloggers, as well as some larger portfolio holders. The event winds down today at 3:15 EDT at SnapNames.

As of our writing this morning 9 of the 53 domains have received bids that have met the reserve. More than half of the list of domains have “No Reserve” prices so there’s plenty of domains that can be picked off for next to nothing and still have no bids.  Like most auctions, these will be bid on at the last minute.

We don’t often do “picks” here but I’ll throw some out for my good friends at DNW:

blogtech.com – at No Reserve seems like a no-brainer

beefjerky.net – at No Reserve but current bidding at ~$400 . Checkout Jerky.com for ideas.

cathleen.com -  Katherine.com sold for $18,500 on Namejet on 4/16/2010 making this priced to sell

leptospirosis.com – The google search volume on this is ~60,000.  Disease/medical domains get reliable traffic and this one is priced to sell too.

albanycondo.com – at No Reserve is a no-brainer. Search volume seems low but this is a slam dunk domain for a realtor.

flanked.com – any 1 worder at No Reserve gets a nod from me.

Lastly, someone has to buy the ironic unsellable.com at No Reserve :)

There are quite a few auctions going on over the next few weeks and it’s hard to keep track of what closes when. We’ll try and keep you abreast on these events. Remember, half of the domain name game is just showing up to play. Make sure you check out this auction as the game is almost over.

Check the full list after the jump.

7,000 Domains Recovered Through UDRP Have Lapsed

by Chad Kettner in Categories: Up to the Minute

Andrew Allemann of Domain Name Wire posted an interested article this morning showing that nearly 7,000 domains won through UDRP have expired. The article was based on the news release by Corporate Service Company, which stated:

“Of the domains that were won and handed back to the brand owner, almost 4,000 have been subsequently lapsed and are now available for registration. Also, an additional 3,000 domain names were lapsed after they were won and then re-registered – in some cases, by third parties. In fact, CSC found that several companies have disputed the same domain name up to three times because they continue to allow it to lapse.”

AOL Wreaks Havoc On Advertising Domains

by Chad Kettner in Categories: Up to the Minute

Tags: , , , ,

The headline at TechCrunch says it all: “AOL Thinks It Owns All Advertising Domains”. The company is not only partly responsible for the $1.4 million sale of Ad.com falling through, but it is now suing Advertise.com for trademark infringement and unfair competition based on the domain name similarities to AOL-owned Advertising.com.

As reported at Domain Name Wire, the lawsuit claims:

“…Advertise.com recently commenced use of the virtually identical and confusingly similar designation Advertise.com and design in connection with the same and complimentary services as those offered by Plaintiffs under their federally-registered Advertising.com name and marks and their Ad.com name and marks.”

AOL believes that this could cause confusion for anybody who thinks Advertise.com is affiliated with AOL’s Advertising.com or Ad.com trademarks. The Ad.com mark, by the way, is not based on AOL’s ownership of the domain name (which it has never owned), but rather related to the company calling the Advertising.com unit “Ad.com” in the past.

In the court filings, AOL orders Advertise.com to pay for damages, gains, profits, advantages, and costs… plus “change its corporate and legal name to one that does not incorporate the term ADVERTISE.COM, ADVERTISING.COM, AD.COM or any term confusingly similar thereto”.

And remember, AOL doesn’t own Ad.com or any trademarks directly related to Advertise.com. Bizaare.

Andrew Alleman Leaves Domain Name Wire for DNN.com

by Chad Kettner in Categories: April 1

Tags: , , , , ,

Please note that the following is a parody intended for April Fools day 2009.

A big welcome to Andrew Alleman, who has left his editorial role at DomainNameWire.com to join the growing team at DomainNameNews.com. Andrew comes to us with over 10 years of experience in the domain industry and much success as a writer and publisher at DNW. He has been quoted in the New York Times, Sydney Morning Herald, The Daily Sausage and a number of other publications and is expected to continue his professional growth as a member of our team, albeit in a much smaller role than what he has grown accustomed to.

“Andrew is obviously a very accomplished writer, contributor, and analyst with a keen interest in the domain industry,” said Adam Strong of DNN.com. “We’re excited to have him on our team.”

Andrew Allemann explained his decision on DomainNameWire.com earlier today:

“By joining Domain Name News, I’m partnering with a great team that can help take the load off my back so I can sit back, relax, hang out in Vegas all week and enjoy a bit more freedom while still staying in touch.  I’d like to thank Adam and Frank for giving me the chance to work with them in the upcoming months, and hopefully long into the future.”

GoDaddy subsidiary warehouses expired domains

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Registrars

Tags: , , , , ,

As unconvered by Domain Name Wire, Godaddy has joined the ranks of registrars that participate in the participate in Domain Warehousing practices. Domain Warehousing means the practise where a registrar keeps domains for themselves after the original registrant fails to renew the domain. Tucows, one of the registrars that is more open about following this practise, came under a public crossfire after Michael Berkens of The Domains reported about Tucows selling names which they had taken over when the original registrant failed to renew the domains. eNom, which has been following similar practices hiding the domain names from their portfolio behind whois privacy, has recently launched a sales site for those domains as well.

Apparently GoDaddy is going out of their way in order to hide the fact that they too, take over expired domains from registrants. They set up a company aptly named “Standard Tactics, LLC“, which takes over some domains that have not sold on GoDaddy‘s TDNAM site and continues to monetize them.

Ask.com to stop supplying Google feed to Domain Parking Companies

by Frank Michlick in Categories: PPC industry

Tags: , , , ,

According to an article by DomainNameWire, Ask.com is to stop syndicating the google advertising feed to parking providers.

Domain Name Wire has learned through multiple sources that Ask.com’s Google feed will no longer be syndicated to parking companies as of March 1. A number of parking companies use this feed to augment other search results. I know that Parked.com uses it for traffic to some foreign companies, and apparently HitFarm and Skenzo use this feed as well.

Ask.com had also recently dropped a large part of their domain parking deals.
