NamesCon | Las Vegas January 11th-14th 2015 2014-12-16 17-56-02

A change on the Namescon Agenda lead The Domains to ask if NamesCon had bought out domainFEST – well, here’s the official press Release and reply. DomainFest becomes the first day of the conference geared towards newcomers. If you read the text on the updated DomainFest website, it appears that there’s a plan to carry the name forward and use it for “a series of international DomainFest regional events”.

DomainFest is one of the longest running events in the Domain Name industry. Its early origins in the early 2000s was a one day gathering with a mix of sharing new industry information and a social networking event. DomainFest will continue that tradition after being acquired by NamesCon.

Originally established as a casual meeting of domain investors as early as 2002, Donna Mahony generously donated the domain name to Oversee in 2006. Starting with small conferences in LA and Barcelona, Oversee grew Domainfest into a large, global conference series, attracting domainers, marketing professionals and celebrity speakers from all over the world.

“We are very proud of the industry-leading conference that we built up over the years”, said Debra Domeyer, CEO of Oversee.net.  “DomainFest is one of the longest running events in the Domain industry.  We are proud to recognize the importance of the DomainFest events to the industry and are extremely happy to be passing the DomainFest ownership into the capable hands of NamesCon.”

Richard Lau, producer of NamesCon said “We are carrying the DomainFest torch forward. NamesCon co-founder Jothan Frakes and I met at the Seattle DomainFest in March 2005. We are immensely proud to be able to announce that Sunday, Jan 11, 2015 is ‘DomainFest @NamesCon’.” Like DomainFest conferences in the past, NamesCon 2015 Las Vegas will also host a domain auction (run by Right of the Dot) and feature Keynote speakers and world-class entertainment.

DomainFest @NamesCon will start at 10am on Sunday Jan 11, 2015 and the day will be an excellent venue for newcomers and veterans alike. Jothan Frakes, who has a long history of producing domain conferences stated, “The DomainFest events had great energy and I am delighted to see that the success of NamesCon will maintain the spirit and legacy of DomainFest.”  Jothan has planned out a full agenda for the Domainfest @NamesCon day.

The Sunday Evening Networking and Entertainment event for DomainFest @NamesCon will feature Peter Pavone – the Las Vegas Best 2014 Tribute Artist of the Year.

DomainFest @NamesCon is included in your conference pass when you register for NamesCon 2015 Las Vegas.

Two great conferences, one low price.

With the TRAFFIC conference right around the corner, many domainers may be wondering if DomainFest is still going to occur.  Andrew at DNW heard from Oversee that the show was still going on and Moniker is already taking auction submission, but it sure would be nice to make travel arrangements soon.  Well here you go, DNN just received word tonight from and Oversee employee that the show dates are now confirmed as February 5-8, 2013

The event will be returning to the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica and as in past years the entire Fairmont Miramar has been reserved for conference attendees.

We were told that Oversee will be announcing  the “specifics on the conference agenda, online registration and discounted hotel room rates” in early October.

DOMAINfest Global Silent Auction Nets $50,715 USD

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Domain Auction

Tags: , , , , ,

The silent DOMAINfest Auction by Moniker & SnapNames concluded today, selling another 21 out of the 323 listed domains for a total of $50,715 USD. The live auction during the event 23 sold domains out of 61 domains for $393,450 USD. Both results are unofficial and according to our own tally.

After Oversee.net sold Moniker and Snapnames to Keydrive (DNN broke the news) at the end of January, it will be interesting to see if Oversee.net will continue to partner with another partner for the DOMAINfest live auctions. Results for many of the last live auctions at conferences have been rather disappointing.

DOMAINfest Global 2012 to Introduce Fantasy Domaining Contest

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Events

Tags: , , , , ,

Over the years Oversee.net’s DOMAINfest in LA has consistently expanded beyond domaining and has become an inclusive event for anyone who relies on domains – domainers, registries, registrars, resellers, hosting company etc. This year I even spotted Matt Mullenweg of WordPress fame.

For the 2012 conference the crew behind the event is introducing a new contest – the Fantasy Domaining Contest. The winner will receive a trip to DFG 2012 that includes a travel stipend of $1,000, four nights at the hotel plus free admission to DFG. The winner will also receive a “Fantasy Domaining Champion” trophy on stage at DOMAINfest Global 2012 and all bragging rights that go with it. Second place receives a free DFG 2012 conference ticket and third place receives 50% off a DOMAINfest Global 2012 ticket

The contest roughly resembles Fantasy Football in terms of its format and rules.  Contestants “draft” their initial roster from a master list of 1,000 domains, put some in-play, substitute domains in-play, and trade domains with other contestants.  The contest is fun and provides a way for beginners and experts alike to test their skills and intuition in projecting the PPC revenue of domain names.

Each contestant will draft/select a portfolio of 35 domains from a master list of 1000 owned by Oversee.net. The master list can be downloaded if you prefer to take some time to analyze the domains, or simply use their online search filters to find domains with desired keywords or categories. Choose domains that you think produced the most PPC revenue last year between Dec 1, 2010 and January 16, 2011. Select 25 of your 35 domains to put on your In-Play game roster. This roster’s cumulative 12/1/10 to current-date-last-year PPC revenue determines your overall ranking.

For details and a full explanation of how to play, including Official Contest Rules, and to sign-up, visit http://www.domainfest.com/fantasy. Unfortunately the contest is open only to residents of the United States.

The contest begins began on December 1, 2011 and ends January 16, 2012. The first, second and third place winners will be notified on January 18, 2012. Signing up for the contest is free. Only one entry per person is allowed.

PITCHfest Contest

The third annual PITCHfest Contest which aims to showcase new online business, service and technology ideas to the internet entrepreneurs and domain investors at the conference will take place again in 2012. This year, each finalist will be given no more than 3 minutes on stage in a rapid fire session to present their innovative idea. Presentations will take place during the PITCHfest session on Wednesday, February 1st at 4:00pm.

The winner will be the finalist who received the highest combined score from the following judges:

  • John Morris, Chairman Emeritus of Tech Coast Angels, the largest angel organization in the country;
  • Jeff Cohn, entrepreneur/VC involved in SoCal investment opportunities and CEO of two nationally recognized crowd-sourcing location based mapping services;
  • Scott Jarus, Oversee.net Director and Chairman and CEO, Ironclad Performance Wear
  • Ben Kuo, founder of SOCALTECH LLC, and the publisher of socalTECH.com, has been active in supporting Southern California’s high tech industry.

Again, the audience will have an opportunity to vote and select their favorite product/service using a real-time text message voting system. It’s always fun to see whether the audience selects the same winner as the judges. The deadline for submissions is January 16, 2012. DomainFest NYC Online Auction Ends with $120,000 Total Sales

by Adam Strong in Categories: Domain Auction

Tags: , , , ,

The DomainFest New York auction ended yesterday with little fanfare and a paltry $120,289 in sales. The top sale went to FijiIslands.com for $58,830.

The 2011 Domain Fest event did not have a live auction event like in 2010, rather they chose to run an online-only auction. It is interesting to note these changes, but debatable if the format has anything to do with the results as there are a variety of factors in the success of an auction.  It will also be interesting to compare these results with the upcoming TRAFFIC auction where the promoters have announced that there will be no online bidding at the live-only auction event.

The results haven’t been “officially” released by Oversee but the Moniker/Snapnames site has posted the results. They have been copied below.

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Events

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

DomainSponsor, the domain name monetization unit of Oversee.net and organizer of the DOMAINfest series of conferences, has announced it will return to the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica for their annual DOMAINfest Global event from January 31 to February 2, 2012.

As in past years, the entire Fairmont Miramar Hotel has been reserved exclusively for DOMAINfest Global in order to provide attendees with an intimate, distraction-free environment that maximizes networking opportunities.

Highlights from the February 2011 conference included a standing-room-only keynote address from legendary Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons, plus an entertaining fireside chat with Ben Mezrich, author of The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook. More than 700 domain name investors, online marketing professionals, and service providers from 30 countries attended the conference. A party at they event also made it into the main stream media through a mysterious illness that about 1/4 of the attendees.

Registration for the event will opens September 1st with an early bird registration fee of $995, which includes all sessions, meals and official evening parties, will apply from September 1 through September 30.  From October 1 through December 31 the standard discounted rate will be $1,195 per attendee.  Beginning on January 1, the regular pre-conference rate of $1,295 will apply. DomainFest Barcelona Auction Flops Again, Few Domains Sold

by Adam Strong in Categories: Domain Auction

Tags: , , , , , ,

After the disappointment of the DomainFest Barcelona live auction cancellation, the SnapNames.com re-do auction has ended with what most would consider to be more disappointment, only 4 5 domains sold for a total of $55,670. (Note this is an unofficial total).

The highest priced sale, Houses.co.uk at $50,870,  received the most activity on bidding with 19 bidders and at least 3 bidders battling for the name at over $20k.  The auction extended 30 minutes past the end time. It’s noteworthy to mention this sale was for one of the best names on this list started with a No Reserve price.

A few other domains appeared to receive bids that were seemingly near the reserve prices including worldclock.com, bodysculpting.com, duffelbag.com and premed.com.

One bidder with the alias “buyitfromme” chipped away at the price on WorldClock.com over the course of over 30 minutes, essentially outbidding themselves.  The initial bid came in at $25,001 and the bidder kept upping their bid at the >1 minute mark. As I watched I kept thinking “Just keep bidding right away. Let’s get this over with. Why are you waiting until there’s >1 minute left”  Their bid amount reached $41,000.  After all that effort, the domain still didn’t meet the reserve.

Notably, Social.com received a bid of $2.5 million today, which means there is some high-level interest in the domain, but the offer failed to meet the reserve.

pilsners.co.uk  – $300
houses.co.uk – $50,870
gado.com – $3000
seoagencies.com – $900
semexpert.com – $600

All domains from the “live” auction will be entered in to the extended auction along with many other domains. The extended auction can be viewed online here.

As pointed out elsewhere, Moniker did broker Data.com for over the $1.5 million mark. The domain was on this list and removed before the auction, and it was not part of this auction or the results from today.

Health Officials Find Source of Legionella at Playboy Mansion

by Adam Strong in Categories: News

Tags: , ,

The LA Times is reporting that Los Angeles health officials have discovered the Legionella bacteria in a water source at the famous Playboy Mansion.  In case you haven’t been following the story, hundreds of Domain Fest attendees reported symptoms similar to those common in cases of Legionnaires and Pontiac Fever after attending Domain Fest events.

Speculation from conference attendees centered around activities at the Playboy Mansion because of it’s array of water sources including a pool, the famous grotto and fog machines used on the dance floor.

An attendee from Europe was one of the first reported on DnJournal to have been diagnosed with Legionnaires.  As the reports started mounting a health department investigation began.  As you can expect if you put the name Playboy and disease together, you’re sure to instigate a media frenzy, not to mention a few stand up comedy bits.

Early on in the investigation, Playboy officials and even Hugh Hefner himself came out stating “There is no truth in the rumor that anyone caught anything at the Playboy Mansion. Nor is there any evidence.” It’s good to see that they’ve isolated the source and that this can be fixed.

Elliot Silver has pointed out that the CDC did not confirm that the illness attendees experience was a result of the reported Legionella bacteria found at the Mansion.

This does not however confirm Legionella as the source of the illness, as Legionella bacteria are commonly found in moist or wet environments. “We are still considering several possible causes of illness,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer.

Ok, so they found the source and they’re not going to say that this is what caused the illnesses.  Fair enough but it appears that the deductions are already being made by LA Times.

LA County Health Department Investigating Illnesses Surrounding DomainFest

by Adam Strong in Categories: Events

Tags: , , ,

LA County health officials have sent out an email to attendees of DomainFest asking attendees of the event to fill out a survey if they are experiencing any respiratory issues since attending the conference.

If you attended DomainFest Global in Santa Monica, please take the time to fill out the survey, whether you are sick or not. If you know an attendee who may be ill, please notify them as they should see a doctor if they haven’t done so yet.  We’ve heard reports of others who are sick in the industry who are just discovering that their peers are sick as well.

Two of us at DNN have already been diagnosed with pneumonia.  I was feeling well the day I went in but have been zapped of all energy recently, as pneumonia does.  Others are reporting diagnosis as severe Legionnaires disease. This is a very serious matter and we wish everyone well .  Please see a doctor as soon as possible if you are sick and have not yet seen one !

Please follow this link and let the LA County Health Dept know:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HGN3T7N

If you have any questions you can contact Dr. Dawn Terashita dterashita@ph.lacounty.gov and Dr. Caitlin Reed careed@ph.lacounty.gov.
