Since many domain investors keep lists of domains ready to purchase when there are specials available, we figured we’d let you know about a current special that one of the early registrars, AIT Domains, is running for a limited time. You can register or transfer any COM, NET, ORG, INFO, BIZ or US domains for $2.99 including private registration and ICANN fee. No coupon code is needed. The price is only valid for the first year of domain registration and a limit of five domains per customer applies. Find out more about the special on their site.

Yahoo! Introduces PPC Limits for Parked Domains on Five TLDs [updated]

by Frank Michlick in Categories: PPC industry

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

According to an email sent by domain parking company TrafficZ last night, Yahoo! has introduced a daily revenue cap for parked domains in the .biz, .co, .info, .tv and .us TLDs. If a domain exceeds the revenue cap, no more paid Yahoo! ads will be displayed on the domain for another three days.

Unfortunately the announcement does not reveal the revenue cap, which could potentially be determined on a per domain basis. I would expect the parking companies that are on a Yahoo! feed to either a) implement a backup feed for those TLDs or b) ensure that a backup feed is used once Yahoo! ceases to deliver ads for those domains.

[Update]: We now have a confirmation from Parked.com & WhyPark.com that this restriction was also imposed on their Yahoo! feed. Craig Rowe told DNN via email: “Yes, this is affecting our Yahoo feed as well, and all Yahoo domain match feeds.  In our case, when the capping kicks in, we backfill the domain with ads from second-tier feeds.  So, it’s not that a domain will make no money, but rather it’ll earn less from those ads.

[Update2]: TrafficZ sent another update on Aug 17, offering “TrafficZ clients with exceptional .INFO, .US, .TV, .BIZ and/or .CO domains” to submit those domains to their account team for further review. The email goes on to say that “where appropriate, TrafficZ will work with Yahoo! to have revenue cap limits raised or removed from qualified domains, regardless of TLD“.

Afilias to Consider Proposals for Allocation of 1 & 2 Letter INFO Domains

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Registries, Up to the Minute

Tags: , ,

Afilias just announced that they are accepting proposals for single and double character .INFO domains. Applications have to be submitted with non-refundable $1,000 fee and have to be received before 12:00 UTC on 30 April 2011. The registry operator  reserves the right, to reject proposals that are received after the submission deadline or are deficient or incomplete.

The proposal form and additional details can be found on the Afilias Website.

Afilias had used a similar process for the allocation of unassigned .INFO sunrise domains, however never published the final results of the process. DNN knows of at least two applications that received a rejection from that allocation phase without receiving what the applications consider a proper explanation.

[Update] Afilias has removed the description of the re-allocation process for unassigned .INFO sunrise domains from their site along with the list of domains. DNN archived the information.

ICANN approves new .INFO policy

by Frank Michlick in Categories: ICANN / Policy

Tags: , , , , , ,

As reported earlier, Afilias had submitted a proposal to ICANN for the .INFO gTLD that would allow them to shut down domain names at will if they consider them abusive. ICANN has approved the proposal without soliciting comments, however comments to any registry proposal can be submitted at any time by sending an email to registryservice (at) icann.org and are published on the ICANN website.

Apparently Afilias has presented the changes to their agreement as a “new” service. However this function is provided by Registrars, ISPs and Hosting companies today. Several parties have submitted their concerns about this new policy, despite some small modifycations by the registrar operator.

Domain Name Registry As Judge, Jury and Executioner

by Adam Strong in Categories: Featured

Tags: , , , ,

In a recent memorandum to ICANN, .info domain name registry provider Afilias has proposed that the company be responsible for all decisions regarding .info domain name abuses. The proposed Abusive Use Policy has its root in the good intention of comabting the use of domain names for phishing, spamming or other malcious use, however the proposal provides a greater amount of control to the registry and leaves the door open for the registry to make important decisions on what is and is not to be considered abusive use of a domain name.

Google temporarily drops .info domains from it’s index

by Frank Michlick in Categories: Miscellaneous

Tags: , , ,

On May 23rd, Google temporarily removed .info domains from its search index. While there has been no official statement from Google, speculations about the reason have been ranging from an attempt to ban “cheap” domain registrations (the .info registry is known to run promotions) to a mere technical glitch.
