DomainFest Dates Confirmed, Feb 5-8, 2013

With the TRAFFIC conference right around the corner, many domainers may be wondering if DomainFest is still going to occur.  Andrew at DNW heard from Oversee that the show was still going on and Moniker is already taking auction submission, but it sure would be nice to make travel arrangements soon.  Well here you go, DNN just received word tonight from and Oversee employee that the show dates are now confirmed as February 5-8, 2013

The event will be returning to the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica and as in past years the entire Fairmont Miramar has been reserved for conference attendees.

We were told that Oversee will be announcing  the “specifics on the conference agenda, online registration and discounted hotel room rates” in early October.

Guest Post : The New Sweet Spot is The Old Sweet Spot

Much discussion has been made about the recent Aftermarket auction and the so dubbed “new sweet spot” that allowed for a high percentage of sales.

With a good deal of confidence, I can say this epiphany bewildered more than a few domainers – some of which have been feeding the ‘sweet spot’ for years.

For if we look back and try and locate the origins of the ‘sweet spot’, we need look no further than the Gold Coast of Australia.

In late 2008, DomainConsultant.com and Aftermarket put on an auction at TRAFFIC Down Under that is likely still champ in terms of sell-through-rate (STR) – a whopping 81% of the names in the catalog.

And the total offering was not fifty, it was 100 names with an average sale price of…$3,000. Names sold included iUS.com, Up.com.au, Camera.co.uk, Saws.com and SkiEurope.com – almost all in the ‘sweet spot.’

So part of the point is to say that the ‘sweet spot’ has been there for some time yet the other side says you still need a Voodoo.com or Contests.com to really make it profitable.

Because while hitting the sweet spot repeatedly produces high STR, auctioneers must also find a way to yield, minimum, at least $200,000 in sales to break-even.

Making a profit? Depends on expenses but usually somewhere between $250,000 to $300,000 in sales.

And that is the rub, for in some ways you need to focus on the big dollar sale or the sweet spot but not both given time and resources, market and objectives (high STR vs. high figure).

Thus we can magnify the risk involved: too many sweet spot sales and you don’t make enough yet go for the big dollar and miss – and you end up with nothing.

It’s a tricky dance, yes, but by no means is it a new one.

DNN.com and DNW.com are combining forces to host  a live chat and video broadcast at 3:50 EST today.  Andrew Alleman and Adam Strong will be chatting live during the “pre-game” video chat and will be in the chat room throughout the auction.   Barring any technical issues, we’re also hoping to be joined by at least one other person, Chef Patrick, live from the auction floor.

TRAFFIC Adds Night Pass

For all you late night partying domainers, there’s some good news coming from the TRAFFIC show. Rick Schwartz announced today that the TRAFFIC domain show in New York will be adding a new “Night Pass”.  The $995 pass allows attendees to be at the auctions, night parties and the trade show floor after 4pm.

“We know besides the 300+ people that will register for T.R.A.F.F.I.C. in New York there will be lots of additional folks that will be in the city during TRAFFIC and would like to attend but are “Night Owls” and don’t want to go to the seminars and meals and still pay full pop to get in. So Mike Fiol suggested a new NIGHT TRAFFIC PASS. “

We’ve felt TRAFFIC was sorely lacking some sort of “ala carte” pass for a while now.  Many attendees come to the shows to have meetings with other attendees and don’t tend to sit in on the conferences, browse the show floor or  enjoy any meals.  There’s attendees who just want to watch the auction and there’s likely attendees who don’t want any of the late night partying either (though likely very few).  I think I’ve had 2 meals on-site at the last domain shows that I attended, yet my admission was paying for all that food.  I personally wouldn’t mind seeing a daily pass or one without meals as options, but this new idea is a step in the right direction.

Kudos to Rick for listening to feedback and making this available. I know quite a few people who fall in to this demographic, but they may have already bought their ticket.

Rick Latona’s TRAFFIC Extended Auction Ends Today

Rick Latona cleared nearly $375,000 in sales at TRAFFIC last week, but there are still more domain names up for auction in the extended auction that closes today. Of the over 400 domains, several of the names have already met their reserves and will be selling (see below). The most notable of these names is French.com which has a $150,000 bid.

Google Expands Adsense For Domains

Google announced today that they have extended their Adsense for Domains to all publishers. Although, the program is being opened to all publishers, Google will continue to monitor compliance. The Adsense Blog states that the program will be rolled out to North American English-speaking markets first and then expanded into additional markets and languages in the future.

One interesting point that is made by Google in this post is that advertisers are asking for their ads to appear in this AFD program and they feel that the traffic from domains converts well. From the blog :

Advertisers also have additional opportunities to find their customers, and ads on these pages convert well. In addition, we regularly receive requests from advertisers who have found domains to be an effective way to reach their users.
