7,000 Domains Recovered Through UDRP Have Lapsed

by Chad Kettner in Categories: Up to the Minute

Andrew Allemann of Domain Name Wire posted an interested article this morning showing that nearly 7,000 domains won through UDRP have expired. The article was based on the news release by Corporate Service Company, which stated:

“Of the domains that were won and handed back to the brand owner, almost 4,000 have been subsequently lapsed and are now available for registration. Also, an additional 3,000 domain names were lapsed after they were won and then re-registered – in some cases, by third parties. In fact, CSC found that several companies have disputed the same domain name up to three times because they continue to allow it to lapse.”

This doesn’t surprise me. I’ve found from personal experience that a significant number of domains I have sold in the aftermarket (for hundreds or even thousands of dollars) end up being dropped by the buyer on the next expiration cycle. I’d have to guess that it’s somewhere north of 20%.

It’s unbelievable.

It’s happening with the cctlds as well – was subject to a UDRP, but has been dropped. Adidas didn’t file a UDRP for and it’s available again.
