I’m surprised that so may people have COMPLETELY missed the point about aboutus.org, which we have been using a little for some of our domains and sites. I have liked what they were doing, but I was also not sure how long the would be around. Still, getting a free listing to promote our sites and domain names is always a good thing.

Now that I know they are serious and realize that they have already been here for THREE YEARS (And how many successful sites do YOU have that have been online for that long…?) I plan on spending a lot more time there.

Here’s what you need to know about their site: If a listing for a domain does note exist and you search for it, their system creates a listing and tries to pull information from the sites meta tags and content.

THEN, if you don’t LIKE it or what something different, you can freakin EDIT THE LISTING…! I can’t understand why some people bitch and complain about a free resource they can use to market and promote their sites, AND DOMAINS!

As for the aboutus.org business itself, and concept… It is a great one. Easy money.

The web is full of opportunities and review sites are pretty popular ;)

I do agree with Francois that it is not a standalone business and relies heavily on third parties. Without them… They got nothing. We’ll see how it goes :)

It irriates me everytime I see that instead of our domain showing up top in searches, its this site’s url/OurDomain.com showing up.

I agree with users above that is is a crappy site taking advantage of other sites and hardly providing anything worthwhile.

Thanks to the use of “black hat” techniques and with the help of a giant of our industry they succeed escape the Google radar and spam so much their index (I will not say more on this).
But trust me it’s CRITICAL and URGENT they succeed having a service that works without the need to be constantly bombarded by search engine traffic.
Otherwise I should not be surprised their SERPS quickly fall down to the troublion or worst, their site be banned.
SEO tips and tricks don’t live for ever and unfortunately I know about it myself.
This is why I said it’s a RISKY INVESTMENT.
By experience I will say when you play the Google lottery, you may win parties but know that at the end you allways lost.
This is why you cannot base any serious business on search engine traffic only.
If the site, service you provide has low value and only live thanks to search engine traffic you future is dark.
It’s totally absurd to think Google can give you the traffic, give you the AdSense money and that you only have to enjoy the profit.
This is why it’s urgent they use investors money to try to “make it happen”: Use existing traffic to create an appealing service of interest.

Francois, I have often thought the same thing. All they are doing is scraping data from other sites and consolidaing it. And, Google gives them top position.
If I scraped data from a number of sites, Google would penalize me.

Plus, everytime I go to a AboutUs listing I say to myself, “why did I waste my time?”

If they were supplying something really interesting, it would be beneficial.
Maybe, the average surfer gets something out of it. But, I don’t.

And, then I also wonder about copyright and TM infringement. I haven’t thought that thru yet. But, that is not my problem, it theirs.
