Google Toolbar hijacks 404 Errors
Following suit of Internet Explorer’s behavior, users of the Google toolbar will now also be redirected when they encounter 404 error pages. Just like with Internet Explorer, the “service” only kicks in if the error page is shorter than 512 bytes. The resulting error page also suggests a Google search, which in turn then is monetized by ads.
