Protester Changes Name to Domain Name

by Adam Strong in Categories: Up to the Minute

A teenager in North Carolina has changed her name to a domain name.  Jennifer Thornburg is now officially recognized as CutOutDissection.com.  Nineteen year old Thornburg changed her name to CutOutDissection as a protest to schools dissecting animals. The teen was quoted saying “Once they find out what my name is, they want to know more about what the Web site is about.”   Of course they do.

I don’t recall a person changing their name to a domain, but this doesn’t seem like something that is new. Someone out there surely has done this before right ? I bet there’s parents who have named their kid with a domain name extension.  I’m not referring to naming a child something like John Jacob Smith and then buying JohnJacobSmith.com.  I’m talking about naming the child something that reflects a domain presensce in their name and putting it right on the birth certificate, JohnJacobSmith.com.  If this hasn’t happened yet, just give it a little time. Maybe some corporate marketing VP is reading this right now saying “YES! that’s it !”

Corporations have pulled similar stunts in renaming other things with a domain extension. Back during the “.com boom” a small town in Oregon changed their name to Half.com to promote the site and later in 2005 Santa, Idaho became SecretSanta.com.

Hi Adam,

There has been at least one attempt: Edward Forchion wanted to be named njweedman.com. But a court refused, to protect the public order.
See: http://www.njweedman.com/namechange.htm

That one is funny. Thanks Cedric. Naming a baby with .com is the next one. I’m sure someone has done it and will post.

So…. explain to me what happens if the domain expires? Does the person’s name also expire? If they forget to renew the domain, would they have any legal right to take it from a dropcatcher? Could someone registering a domain like CutOutDissectionsucks.com be considered harrasment or libel?

And what does it mean when the domain, CutOutDissection.com resolves to Peta2.com? Oh, I see. This is just a PUBLICITY STUNT. The domain CutOutDissection.com is registered to PETA…!! If you don’t know about PETA, they are militant animal rights people.

I was going to post about this story in my blog, but I don’t promote stunts. Too bad they feel they have to use this kind of crap to get their worthwhile message out there. There are better ways to raise awareness.

…next up we’ll have some crafty entrepreneur changing her personal name to Business.com… then trying to reverse hijack the domain from Donnelly! … Hey if kathy griffin could get her domain name back … why shouldn’t the poor, sweet lady who just happens to be named business.com?
