Reinvent Beta Test Vancouver.com

by Adam Strong in Categories: Up to the Minute

Domain Name News received a tip-off that Vancouver.com has been relaunched in a beta state by Reinvent. The company purchased Vancouver.com in September of 2007 and has obviously been hard at developing this top notch geo domain name.

The site has features that most users would be accustomed to finding at a geocentric website such as hotel reservations, restaurants, events and real estate. However there is one feature on Vancouver.com that really stood out to me, the City Tour section. This area features an animation of the world that quickly zooms in to a 3-D rendering of downtown Vancouver. The user can zoom in on specific buildings and when highlighted some of the building contain a textual description. As this is a beta version of the site, it still seems rough around the edges but I see a ton of potential in a slick interactive map like this.

Interestingly, there was also a poll on the this page which asks users what they think of the site. The results didn’t seem to convey that the users were getting what they were seeking since 44% of over 1300 respondents said the site “needs more work” . I guess the Beta version needs some tweaking but overall it is a very good start from our view.

What do you think about the new Vancouver.com BETA?

  • 17% Good, but it’s a little slow 228
  • 14% I like it! 190
  • 10% It’s cool, excited for what is coming 136
  • 9% It’s great! This is useful! 131
  • 3% Ok, but it’s not easy to use 40
  • 44% This needs more work 589

Thanks for the tip, Adam.

Looking forward to seeing what Kevin and his team do with it.

Were it me, I’d have asked a few more very important “free form/open ended” questions:

1. What do you like most about Vancouver.com (please be as specific as possible)? Why?

2. What don’t you like (if anything) about Vancouver.com (please be as specific as possible)? Why?

3. What else would you like to see on Vancouver.com (please be as specific as possible)? Why?

To maximize the number and completeness of the answers, I’d offer a free Vancouver.com T-shirt to everyone who answers all the questions.
